Tribal colleges seek share of lottery scholarships

The presidents of New Mexico's four tribal colleges testified on Tuesday in support of a bill that would make tribal college students eligible for scholarships under the state lottery.

The program is open to all students who attend public colleges in the state. The tribal college presidents said their institutions need to be included, noting that many tribal college students go onto four-year public institutions.

Ferlin Clark, president of Din College, said the inclusion of tribal colleges will only cost the state $500,000. But Senate Majority Leader Michael Sanchez, a Democrat, questioned the proposal.
