EPA to clean up defunct mine on Spokane Reservation


The Environmental Protection Agency laid out plans to clean up a defunct uranium mine on the Spokane Reservation in Washington.

The EPA said it will cost a total of $152 million to clean up the Midnite Mine. The EPA has sued two companies to pay for the clean up under the Superfund Act [Info and Plan].

The pen pit, hard-rock mine operated from 1955 to 1981. It covered about 350 acres of the reservation. Two open pits, backfilled pits, and a number of waste rock piles and ore/protore stockpiles remain on the site, posing a danger to humans, animals and plants.
