Thousands pouring into Fairbanks for AFN

More than 3,000 people are expected in Fairbanks this week as the Alaska Federation of Natives holds its annual conference.

This is the first time since 1988 that convention has been held in Fairbanks rather than Anchorage. Organizers hope more rural Alaska Natives will be able to attend

The week's events began on Monday with the Elders and Youth Conference, which concludes today. The first Alaska Marketplace, a showcase of Alaska Native ideas, talent and expertise, will be held tomorrow.

The annual AFN convention starts on Thursday and runs through Saturday. Local, state and federal officials are scheduled to address delegates. The Alaska Rural Justice and Law Commission will deliver a report that recommends changes in the rural justice system.
