Nez Perce Chair: Tribe loses friend, advocate

"In a time of significant change for the Nez Perce people; we have lost a great friend and advocate. The death of historian Alvin Josephy Jr. touches the hearts of Nimiipuu and demands reflection on the importance of his life.

The history of Indian people and Europeans on this continent, for all that is past and may seem concluded, is a continuing story. It is a story whose details are critical to the lives of Indians today because they remind us who we are and why the world is as it is. And they should remind us how to live and act now, for the good of our people and our future.

Historians, Indian or non-Indian, are critically important members of society. Mr. Josephy was important for the influence of his writing on many levels of society, but as important for his gentle, graceful example."
