Yellow Bird: Halloween way back in the 'old days'

"My sister and I talked about of our Halloween experiences in Minot back in the "old days," and we realized how different Halloween was then. We had limited television and no Internet - no Internet, now that's scary.

Before the 1950s, Halloween sometimes passed without so much as a "boo!" or even a candy corn. It was a holiday far below Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Halloween door-to-door tricks and treats came to our house in Minot one Halloween evening when my older brother, Pony, came home with a couple of his buddies. It was late, about 9 p.m., and he had a white pillowcase, a little tattered and smudged, gripped around the top like there was a snake in it waiting to wiggle out, and he was smiling like he had won the lottery."
