Tantaquidgeon, Mohegan matriarch, laid to rest

Hundreds of people attended the funeral of Gladys Tantaquidgeon, the oldest member of the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut who died Tuesday, November 1, at the age of 106.

The ceremony began at the Tantaquidgeon Indian Museum, which Tantaquidgeon helped found in 1931. It is considered the first and oldest Indian-run museum in the United States.

From there, the procession moved to Shantok, the tribe's burial ground. Speakers praised Tantaquidgeon's commitment to preserving the tribe's heritage and culture.
