Tributes to R.C. Gorman, famed Navajo artist

Funeral services are being held today in Taos, New Mexico, for R.C. Gorman, the famed Navajo artist who died last week at the age of 74.

The Santa Fe New Mexican hailed Gorman as an artist who defied labels and influence a new generation. "Gorman inspired vast numbers of younger artists to follow his footsteps -- on and off the reservations of America," the paper said.

The Denver Post said Gorman will be missed. "The New York Times once praised him as 'the Picasso of American art,' but R.C. Gorman stood out on his own," the paper said.

Gorman died at a hospital in Albuquerque on Thursday, November 3.
