Leech Lake chairman declares war on 'thugs'

George Goggleye, the chairman of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, has declared war on "thugs" in response to a series of violent deaths and crimes on the reservation.

An October 21 shooting left Brandon Humphrey, 17, dead and two 20-year-olds wounded. On November 7, Michael James Littlewolf, 20, died after being found unconscious on a street. A day later, the body of Samuel Dow, 23, was found in the basement of a home. And in another incident, a 21-year-old man was stabbed and robbed.

Goggleye says he is "fed up" with the violence. He has invited tribal leaders, tribal elders and state and local leaders to a meeting to discuss ways to combat the problem.
