San Manuel Band wins 25 acres in surplus auction

The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians placed the winning bid on 25 acres of surplus state land.

The tribe paid just over $7 million for the land, The Riverside Press-Enterprise reported. The purchase more than triples the tribe's holdings near a planned hotel and retail development, the paper said.

The tribe already owns 12 acres where it plans to break ground on a hotel in 2006. A tribal official said plans haven't been made for the new purchase.
