Struthers, nursing doctorate, dies in Minnesota


Roxanne Struthers, a member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe and one of the few American Indians with a doctorate in nursing, died on Saturday, December 10. She was 53.

Struthers was born and raised on the White Earth Reservation in Minnesota. Her Ojibwe name was Falling Snow.

Struthers earned her Ph.D. in nursing from the University of Minnesota in 1999. She conducted research on Indian health issues, focusing on tobacco use, diabetes, and traditional healing and healers. She was one of 14 American Indians with a doctorate in nursing.
