First Nation woman dies after contracting hantavirus

A Native woman from Saskatchewan died last month after contracting the hantavirus, prompting concern about the spread of the disease.

The woman is believed to have contracted the disease at a home on the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation. Chief Ron Michel is urging residents to clean up yards where deer mice live. The mice spread the disease through urine, droppings, or saliva.

The disease is rare but has afflicted many Natives, primarily Navajos, in the southwest United States.
