Native teen shot and killed by police officer

An eighteen-year-old Native teen from Manitoba was shot and killed by a police officer in Winnipeg on Monday.

Matthew Dumas was allegedly a suspect in a robbery. Police say he was armed an unspecified weapon that was reportedly a screwdriver. He was shot at least twice after being sprayed with pepper mace when he allegedly resisted arrest. He died later in a hospital.

Native leaders are calling for a full inquiry into the incident. They drew parallels to the 1988 shooting of J.J. Harper, another Native teen, at the hands of police.

The shooting is the second time this year a Native person in Manitoba has been killed by a police officer.
