Fort Mojave Tribe opens gym next to Boys & Girls Club

The Fort Mojave Tribe celebrated the opening of a new gym next to its Boys and Girls Club.

The tribe used a $550,000 Community Block Grant and $725,000 of its own money to build the facility. It houses a regulation-sized basketball court and will be used for athletic and community events.

The Community Block Grant is being cut by the Bush administration in the fiscal year 2006 budget. Michael Liu, the assistant secretary for public and Indian housing, said yesterday that Indian-specific grants will continue to be managed by the Department of Housing and Urban Development while the rest of the program will be moved to the Commerce Department.
