Bills make tribal history a part of school curriculum

A pair of bills making their way through the Washington Legislature would require public schools to teach about tribal history.

Schools located on reservations or within a 100-mile radius would be required to include tribal history in their state history or government classes. Supporters, including tribes, educators and students, said it is important to learn about Native Americans.

The bill was heard by a Senate committee yesterday. A House committee is scheduled to vote on its version of the bill today.
