A Wisconsin lawmaker is considering legislation to stop the use of Indian mascots after a key tribal leader called for their removal.
State Rep. Jennifer Shilling, a Democrat, said she became interested after hearing Raymond DePerry, the chairman of the Red Cliff Chippewa Tribe and the president of the Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council, talk about mascots in the first-ever State of the Tribes address on Tuesday.
DePerry said the use of Indian imagery was offensive.
Assembly Speaker John Gard, a Republican, also said he was open to the issue.
