A proposed budget of $3.4 million to carry out Montana's Indian Education for All mandate isn't enough, Indian lawmakers and others said.

The state constitution requires public schools teach about Indian culture and history. But until a state Supreme Court decision last year, officials did little to carry out the mandate.

The Montana Indian Education Association says $23 million over two years is needed. State lawmakers have whittled down the number as they prepare to submit a response to the Supreme Court on how they will fulfill the law.
