Native woman who had heart surgery at age 2 dies

Cynthia J. Doria, a Yankton Sioux woman who underwent heart surgery at the age of 2, died in February. She was 46.

At the time of the operation in 1961, Doria, born Cindy Momsen, was one of the youngest persons to undergo open-heart surgery in California. She only had a 1-in-10 chance of surviving the operation but would likely have died without it, The Redding Record Searchlight reported.

Doria once worked at an Indian health center in Anderson, California.
