Indian lawmaker says bill won't exclude tribes

Washington State Rep. John McCoy (D), a member of Tulalip Tribes, said his bill to require public schools to teach about Indian history and culture wasn't meant to exclude non-recognized and landless tribes.

But leaders of the Duwamish, Snohomish and Chinook tribes have spoken out against the bill as it nears passage in the Legislature. They objected to language in the bill that required a tribe to have a reservation to be included.

McCoy has since removed the provision from the bill. He said recognized tribes will include the stories of non-recgonized tribes.
