Special Trustee Ross Swimmer: I am not a crook

"Regarding Eloise Cobell's 'Indians not being told truth' (Opinion, April 22), of Indian trust accounting and reform efforts at the U.S. Department of Interior: Staff members at Interior have made major strides in trust reform efforts since the passage of the American Indian Trust Fund Management Reform Act of 1994. Cobell's lawsuit, filed in 1996, has brought some important attention to the pressing issues of trust reform. However, some of her statements about my comments are misleading.

Cobell said I misrepresented to a group of reporters the progress of efforts to reconcile Indian trust records. 'All the statements from Swimmer and others at Interior that everything is fine with the records (are) a bald-face lie.'"
