Indian Country confronts rising rate of HIV/AIDS

Once restricted to large cities, HIV and AIDS cases are showing up in reservations across the country and even in remote Alaska Native villages.

The Inupiat village of Kiana, home to 400 people, is one example. After one resident went public with his AIDS diagnosis, the local clinic tested dozens of people. Several came back HIV-positive.

According to the latest statistics, there are about 3,000 American Indians and Alaska Natives with AIDS. But Native health advocates say federal and state funding is scarce. The Indian Health Service only spend $3 million on HIV assessment, prevention and treatment.
