Native community shaken by high suicide rate


The Ahousaht First Nation in British Columbia is seeking help in order to with a large number of attempted suicides and suicides.

In the past six months, 40 young people have tried to kill themselves. One person succeeded.

Last year, 19 people attempted suicide. One person died on December 26, 2004, triggering the other attempts, people say.

In a community of only 850, the suicide rate is sky high. Chief Sean Atleo says the tribe needs more resources to address the problem.
