State seeks taxes from Indian smoke shop consumers

The state of Washington is threatening consumers of an Indian smoke shop with fines unless they pay taxes on tobacco products they bought online.

Scott Maybee, a member of the Seneca Nation of New York, turned over a list of his customers to Washington state officials. They are now asking in-state buyers to pay the state's tax.

The state also claimed Maybee was violating the Jenkins Act but not providing information on his consumers to state officials. States are seeking more authority over Indian smoke shops under a bill that has been debated in Congress.
