The Oneidas of New York, Wisconsin and Canada have been united in their 250,000-acre land claim against the state but tribal members remain divided over the return of the Wisconsin Oneidas to New York.

Some New York Oneidas feel their Wisconsin cousins are motivated by money. They say the Wisconsin Oneidas willingly gave up their rights in New York and shouldn't be allowed to reassert sovereignty now.

But Wisconsin Oneidas say their homeland remains in New York. A settlement with the state could allow the tribe to return and establish a reservation and a casino.

The Wisconsin deal is on hold pending resolution of legal issues raised by a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision. The New York Oneidas say they are still willing to settle with the state.
