Designer turns Pendletons into modern fashions

Mildred Carpenter, a Lakota designer who lives on the Crow Reservation in Montana, is seeing success with her line of contemporary Native clothing.

Carpenter makes most of her clothes using Pendleton blankets. She specializes in Western wear and has designed outfits for Miss Rodeo America, Miss Rodeo California, Miss Rodeo Crow Fair and for the Rocky Boy Madison Memorial Roping.

Carpenter also recently launched a hip-hop clothing line. She made miniskirts, halter tops and dresses out of Pendletons.
