The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee on September 8 approved a bill that authorizes federal grants for non-tribal schools with an enrollment of at least 10 percent Native American students.
Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-New Mexico) wrote the provision as part of the Higher Education Act of 2005. He said it clears up a disparity that authorized grants for schools with high Hispanic and African-American student populations.
If approved, eligible schools can apply to the Department of Education for a competitive grant of at least $200,000 to support their curriculum development and academic instruction, faculty development, the purchase of books and other educational materials, and support academic tutoring and counseling.
