Archaeologists dispute tribe's claim to site

Two archaeologists for the state of New Mexico say a tribal site in downtown Santa Fe might not be linked to Tesuque Pueblo, whose leaders are trying to halt a major construction project.

The archaeologists say they have discovered pottery that indicates the residents of the site moved south of Santa Fe. Tesuque Pueblo is based slightly north of Santa Fe.

The state says as many as 25 remains may be located at the site. Tesuque Pueblo doesn't want any of the burials removed.

The site is located between the city hall and the convention center. The city plans to tear down the convention center and build a larger one.
