California tribes rebuild after devastating fire

Three California tribes whose reservations were destroyed by wildfires in October 2003 are rebuilding their communities.

The San Pasqual Band of Mission Indians suffered the most damage. All 73 homes on the reservation were destroyed.

Since then, 37 homes have been replaced although some renters have left the reservation. Two tribes donated $2 million to Habitat for Humanity to rebuild 18 homes.

The Barona Band of Mission Indians lost 39 homes. All have since been rebuilt with tribal money.

The Rincon Tribe lost 17 homes, most of which were mobile homes occupied by renters. Five tribal families are now living in rebuilt homes or trailers they bought from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
