New markers for Trail of Tears in Arkansas


A marker to the Cherokees who were forced to walk the Trail of Tears was dedicated in Arkansas on Tuesday.

The marker on the Northwest Arkansas Heritage Trail was placed at the barn at Fitzgerald Station. An estimated 8,000 Cherokees camped at the barn while being forced to move to Oklahoma.

The National Trail of Tears Association of Oklahoma joined in the dedication ceremony.
