Bill extends Indian employment tax credit

Provisions in a $56 billion tax bill approved by the House last week extends tax credits for businesses that hire Native Americans.

The two tax breaks are designed to help businesses that hire tribal members or spouses of enrolled tribal members who live on Indian lands. The bill extends the credits for one year.

The provisions are found in Section 102 of H.R.4297, the Tax Relief Extension Reconciliation Act of 2005. They apply to Section 45A and Section 168j of the Internal Revenue Code.

Separately, H.R.597 has been introduced to make the tax breaks permanent.
