Tribes urged to lobby on behalf of Haskell University

Tribes should be lobbying to reverse budget cuts at the Haskell Indian Nations University, the president of the National Indian Education Association said.

Ryan Wilson said students representing 150 tribes attend the school. Each of the tribes should be lobbying members of Congress to prevent Haskell from losing money, he said.

We need to do a better job, he said, The Lawrence Journal-World reported.

The school lost 1.5 percent of its operational budget of $9.5 million due to a government-wide cut to pay for Hurricane Katrina and Iraq. Separately, the maintenance department was cut by $600,000 and is facing a $900,000 deficit due to the high cost of natural gas and pay raises.
