Tribes to lose 760 officers due to loss of COPS grants

Tribes nationwide will lose nearly 760 police officers due to the loss of their Community Orientated Policing Services (COPS) grants.

The COPS program is handled by the Department of Justice. Typically, the grants only run for three years. After the money runs out, tribes must find another source of funds or get rid of the officers they hired.

The Oglala Sioux Tribe in South Dakota hired 59 police officers with its COPS grant. Thanks to a three-year, $1.45 million extension the tribe will be able to save some of its force. But it still has to let go of 21 officers.
