A man from the Pine Ridge Reservation was arrested last week on charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault for an incident that occurred off the reservation.

Dakota Garnier, 19, is accused of participating in the beating attack of a non-Indian man. He and his brother, Dirk Garnier, 20, also wanted in the attack, fled to the reservation after the June 2005 incident.

The state then asked the Oglala Sioux Tribe to negotiate an extradition compact. But before talks concluded, Dakota Garnier was arrested in Rapid City after showing up for an appointment at a health clinic in Rapid City, off the reservation.
