Federal Recognition
Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe looks forward to future

Leaders of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts say they have a lot of work ahead of them as they look forward to their future as a federally recognized tribe.

With recognition, the tribe can receive federal funding for law enforcement, housing, health and other programs. The tribe has provided some services to tribal members going as far back as the 1600s, according to evidence reviewed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

The BIA issued the proposed finding last Friday. A 210-day comment period follows with a final decision expected in March 2007.
