Alcohol called a factor in teen stabbing in Montana

Two 18-year-old Montana teens were "drunk" the night a homeless man died and another was seriously injured, one of the teens testified on Thursday.

Brandon Spotted Wolf, who is now 19, said he and friend Rusty Lee-Ray Russell had been drinking the night prior to the early morning April 26, 2005, incident. He admits that he stabbed John Gewanski, who later died, but claims Russell was the one who delivered the fatal wounds.

Spotted Wolf [picture at right] also testified that he and Russell attacked another homeless man twice. When asked why, he said, "I don't know. We were just drunk," The Billings Gazette reported.

A third man, Henry Rideshorse, was also attacked but did not suffer any injuries. He led police to the arrest of Spotted Wolf, who was found with the knife and blood of the dead victim on his body.

Spotted Wolf has pleaded to deliberate homicide by accountability, aggravated assault and robbery. Russell, who is now 19, is expected to lay the blame on Spotted Wolf when he makes his defense.
