Abramoff Scandal
Tribal lobbying fees used to buy houses, properties

Michael Scanlon, the first member of Team Abramoff to plead guilty, used tribal lobbying proceeds to buy millions in houses and other properties, The News Journal reports.

From May 2001 through January 2005, Scanlon bought 10 properties for $18.7 million, $12.2 million of which was paid in cash. The buys included pricey homes on the Delaware shore.

Scanlon has since sold three homes for $4.5 million more than he paid. He also leased three airplanes, rented a penthouse suite at Ritz-Carlton in Washington and bought land in St. Barts.

For pleading guilty to a conspiracy to defraud tribes, Scanlon will pay up to $19.7 million in restitution.
