Navajos commute long hours for employment

Members of the Navajo Nation often commute long hours for jobs in Durango, Colorado, a situation that could be affected by the immigration debate.

Ophelia Castiano lives in New Mexico and drives about two hours each way to her job at a hotel in Durango. She said she can earn more in Durango but that the high cost of gas affects her paycheck.

Durango faces a labor shortage that is filled by Navajos and by immigrants. Some say the two groups compete for jobs but others say there are more jobs than people able to fill them.
