Muscogee Nation negotiating tobacco compact

The Muscogee (Creek) Nation is negotiating a tobacco compact with the state of Oklahoma, The Tulsa World reports.

The tribe doesn't have a compact with the state. Stores run by the tribe and licensed by the tribe sell cigarettes with a lower tax than the state tax, which was recently raised to $1.03 per pack.

But rather than force the tribe into accepting the higher tax, Gov. Brad Henry (D) is willing to sign an agreement for 66 cents per pack. That would ensure the tribe can sell a carton of cigarettes for $3.70 less than non-tribal stores.
