Yakama Nation's power utility faces challenge

Non-Indians say they will file a legal challenge to the Yakama Nation's new utility company.

Yakama Power began supplying electricity to some tribal agencies, tribal businesses and homes. The tribe wants to expand an offer a cheaper alternative.

But Citizens Stand Up!, a group of non-Indian residents of the reservation, say they fight the effort. They say the tribe has no authority over non-Indians.

The group previously challenged a tax the tribe imposed on another power utility but the state Supreme Court rejected the case.
