Schools seek to increase Native student enrollment
Friday, June 30, 2006

Colleges and universities across the nation are seeking ways to increase Native student enrollment.

American Indians and Alaska Natives are woefully underrepresented at most schools. The Cal State system enrolled only 2,850 Native students out of 406,000. That's less than 1 percent.

Cyndi LaMarr, the executive director of Capitol Area Indian Resources, said Cal State is making progress. Chancellor Charles B. Reed is meeting with tribes and developing strategies to develop stronger ties with the Native community.

Other schools already have developed tribal relationships. Dartmouth University regularly visits reservations in hopes of becoming a familiar name to prospective Native students and their families.
