Red Lake Nation seizes man's boat, fishing gear

A non-Indian man is upset after the Red Lake Nation of Minnesota seized his boat and fishing gear.

Jerry Mueller says he inadvertently went fishing on a part of Upper Red Lake that falls under tribal control. Along with his son-in-law, he faces charges in tribal court for trespassing.

Most of 275,000-acre Red Lake is owned by the tribe. Only about 48,000 acres is open to non-Indians for fishing.

The state Department of Natural Resources supports the tribe's jurisdiction over the lake. But Mueller met with officials there in hopes of contesting the tribe's authority.
