House approves study of Trail of Tears expansion

The House voted 365-5 on Monday to approve a study that could add up to 2,000 miles to the Trail of Tears.

H.R.3085 is sponsored by Rep. Zach Wamp (R-Tennessee). He is part Cherokee, according to The Knoxville News.

The bill gives the Interior Department six months to study possible additions to the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail. The Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians and the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma support the measure.

The Senate is near passage on S.1970, a related version of the bill.
