Federal Recognition
Virginia Indians set to return from trip to England

A delegation of Virginia Indians is returning from a one-week trip to England.

The trip was made in conjunction with the Jamestown 2007 commemoration. Officials in England wanted to learn more about some of the tribes that greeted the Jamestown settlement four hundred years ago.

Kenneth Adams, the chief of the Upper Mattaponi Tribe, said the trip was exciting. He said the 60-member delegation was welcomed with open arms wherever they went.

The tribes visited the grave of Pocahontas, held cultural demonstrations, attended scholarly discussions and met with leaders of Parliament.

The tribes are now hoping a bill to recognize them will be approved by the Senate Indian Affairs Committee. It could be taken up sometime next week.
