Jourdain sworn in as Red Lake council rejects election

Floyd Jourdain Jr. was sworn in as chairman of the Red Lake Nation of Minnesota on Tuesday after the tribal council rejected a call for a new election.

The council voted 7-2 to install Jourdain and four others into office. The vote came during an emotionally charged, three-hour debate.

Jourdain defeated challenger Judy Roy, the tribe's former secretary, by 71 votes. Roy won the on-reservation vote but Jourdain was carried by absentee and off-reservation ballots.

This is Jourdain's second term.
