South Dakota honors Lakota man who helps inmates

The state of South Dakota declared August 28, 2006, as John Around Him Day in honor of Samuel John Around Him, a Lakota language teacher.

John Around Him, 64, is an Oglala Lakota College language teacher and Vietnam War veteran. He has spent 20 years helping Indian inmates in the state prison system stay connected to their language and culture.

"John is a valuable resource to the Department of Corrections staff by providing training for staff and serving as tribal liaison," said Secretary Tim Reisch of South Dakota Department of Corrections, The Rapid City Journal reported.

Indian inmates are 24 percent of the state's prison population, the Journal said.
