Keweenaw Tribe spends $700K to fight mining project

The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community of Michigan has spent $700,000 in legal fees to fight a proposed mining project.

The tribe went to court to halt the permitting process for the Kennecott Eagle Mining Company's proposed sulfide mine. A judge imposed a stay but the Michigan Court of Appeals overturned the ruling.

Tribal leaders say they will continue to fight the proposal. They tentatively approved a request from two tribal members to build a lodge near the mine site for an ongoing protest.
