Survey provides glimpse into Navajo daily life
Wednesday, November 22, 2006

An annual survey of 5,000 families on the Navajo Nation provides a glimpse into daily life on the reservation.

The "2006 Data Trends Summary for Annual Health Survey" looks at various health indicators. It found a higher percentage of Navajo adults and children are exercising at least five days a week.

The increase in exercise came with a decrease in the amount of time that Navajo adults and children spending watching television or playing video games. But nearly half of adults and 38 percent of children said they spent more than two hours pursuing those activities.

In addition to health, the survey examines shifts in cultural behavior. If found that only 5 percent of school-age Navajo children understand Navajo. About two-thirds of Navajo families celebrated a baby's first laugh, an important milestone in Navajo culture.
