Morongo Band to prosecute theft of boulder

The Morongo Band of Mission Indians of California will prosecute the person or persons responsible for the theft of a boulder from the reservation.

The boulder weighs 500 to 800 pounds and has been used by the tribe since the early 1800s. It contains a grinding hole used to grind herbs and seeds.

The tribe is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of those responsible. Someone also tried to take another boulder.

The tribe has asked federal authorities to step in. It is a crime to steal archaeological resources from federal or Indian land.
