WOJB shines with coverage of cross-country ski race

WOJB-FM, a community radio station operated by the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe of Wisconsin, has found lots of fans with its coverage of the American Birkebeiner, the largest cross country ski marathon in North America.

WOJB began covering the event more than 20 years ago. The station reports on weather conditions, offers tips to skiers and waits until the last person crosses the finish line before wrapping it up.

The station considers its best stories to come from the every day skiers who participate in the 51K race. Some people ski in memory of a loved one, to raise money to fight disease or for a particular cause.

"Sometimes it's the story of the race, and sometimes it's the story of their lives," Eric Schubring, the public affairs director at WOJB told The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "There are times when somebody's story will bring us to tears."
