Tragedy at Red Lake: One year after deadly shootings

Tuesday is the one-year anniversary of the March 21, 2005, shootings on the Red Lake Reservation in northern Minnesota that left 10 people dead.

The tribe designated March 21 as a "Day of Remembrance" but no public ceremonies are planned. Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R) issued a proclamation for a moment of silence at 2pm on Tuesday.

Nine people were killed by shooter Jeff Weise, 16, that day. A service will be held at St. Edward's Episcopal Church in Duluth to remember the victims. Among those killed were Weise's grandfather and teachers and students at the Red Lake High School.

Several young people were wounded in the incident. Some are still struggling to recover. Steven Cobenais, 16, who was hit in the face with a bullet, lost an eye and suffers from brain damage. Jeff May, 16, suffered paralysis on most of his left side.

The close-knit community as a whole also suffered. "I think our kids are really hurting, bad," Darrell Auginaush, whose nephew was shot, told Minnesota Public Radio. "I think there's a loss of innocence in our community, security, trust. It's going to take years to rebuild. Generations."

Dozens of young people on the reservation were said to have known about the attack. Only one, the 17-year-old son of Red Lake Chairman Floyd Jourdain Jr., was ever charged. Louis Jourdain pleaded guilty to non-violent crimes and is being treated as a juvenile.
