Tragedy at Red Lake: One year after deadly shootings

Today is the first anniversary of the March 21, 2005, shootings on the Red Lake Reservation in northern Minnesota.

Nine people were killed by shooter Jeff Weise, 16, before he turned the gun on himself. His first victims were his grandfather, Daryl Lussier, and Michelle Sigana, his grandfather's girlfriend. Sigana, who was 32, hasn't garnered as much attention as the other victims but her family -- including a 13-year-old son she had with Lussier -- is still struggling a year later.

Several families are holding memorial dinners in honor of the victims. Tribal members in the Twin Cities, 300 miles away, are coming together again on the anniversary of the tragedy.

On the reservation, the tribe has declared a Day of Remembrance. All tribal offices will be closed. No classes are scheduled at the Red Lake High School, but students and staff will hold a moment of silence in the morning before going home at 2:30pm.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune continues its look at the victims and their families in a story today about Ayden Lussier, the 1-year-old son of Chase Lussier, who was killed in the shootings, and Alex Roy, his 14-year-old mother. Ayden was born just weeks after the incident.
